Resorts of Wisconsin celebrates the grand history of the Badger State’s family-run resorts.

Captivating historical images will give readers a trip down memory lane, while stunning present-day photography shows that many things haven’t changed: people still go to resorts to create family memories revolving around woods, water, and quaint cabins. It is here that people feed their hunger for simpler times and peace from a hurried world.

With well-written historical overviews of the different regions throughout Wisconsin, the book catalogues the growth of tourism and its development into Wisconsin’s third-largest industry.

The individual property stories—with titles ranging from “We’re Going to Party Like It’s 1895” to “Uphill Both Ways” and “The Long Shot,”—are sure to keep the reader engaged and turning the pages.

Resorts of Wisconsin is not designed to be a guide book, although with all of the images it is sure to be used that way. Instead it is a book of historical narratives about the family-run resorts that are surely some of Wisconsin’s best-kept secrets.

So grab the book, read it, and enjoy the trip!

"Adam Swenson and Neil Johnson beautifully narrate Wisconsin's history as told to them through the personal stories of these enduring family resorts. Flipping through the pages of the Resorts of Wisconsin will likely stir nostalgic memories of your youth, or inspire you to create new ones with your own family. "

—Stephanie Klett

Wisconsin Tourism Secretary and former host of Discover Wisconsin

"The family resort has long been as much a part of Wisconsin as the towering pines that shadow rustic log cabins or the glassy blue of lakes that sing to fishermen like the Sirens. Time and so-called progress have swallowed many such soul-renewing retreats but the historic lodges so reverently showcased here are evidence the important tradition of lakeside leisure survives. And good for that: in Wisconsin, may there never be a last resort."

—Dennis McCann

Author of Badger Boneyards and former columnist for the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

"Resorts of Wisconsin is a tremendous book: historically accurate, visually stunning, and a fun read. This book will make us all want to reminisce, and more importantly, get out and enjoy the outdoors and the great resorts that provide such a wonderful gateway to the places we love."

"Highly researched and with more than 800 photos, Resorts of Wisconsin captures the essence of the classic Wisconsin resort. For more than a century, multiple generations of families escaped to the state's rural resorts—and not just the Northwoods. Adam Swenson and Neil Johnson have traveled the state to bring readers the stories of long-lost resorts and those that have managed to stay afloat. Resorts of Wisconsin tells the story of the places and faces that have kept this Wisconsin tradition alive."

—Kristen Schueing

editor of Wisconsin Trails Magazine

"In words and photos, Resorts of Wisconsin captures the rustic beauty and amazing history of the family-owned lodges that came to define the 'Northwoods vacation' of twentieth-century America. Every resort is unique, but all share a common purpose—to provide guests with an unforgettable experience they will want to repeat soon and often. As you read these stories and gaze at these photos, you will find yourself drawn back to a simpler time of rowboats, horse-drawn buggies and sumptuous meals with a priceless lakeside view. Times have changed, but these places still exist, and they still beckon the weary traveler with comforts only a family resort can provide."
