Explore Wisconsin Resorts by Region

With Michigan’s Upper Peninsula as the northern border and Green Bay to the east, water is one of the primary reasons people visit this beautiful area. The famous Eagle River/Three Lakes chain of twenty-eight lakes (the largest number of inland interconnecting lakes in the world) gives boaters phenomenal opportunities, and provides anglers with gamefish aplenty. With the Minocqua Chain, Pike Lake Chain, and Moen Lake Chain (and a host of others as well), visitors to this part of the state never run out of fishing and boating options.

Whitewater adventurers find a lot to like in the Peshtigo and Menominee rivers—the Peshtigo has a number of waterfalls and forms the Caldron Falls and High Falls Flowage around Crivitz. All throughout the region, rivers abound with rafting, canoeing, and kayaking opportunities.

Cities like Rhinelander (the Hodag City), Minocqua (the Island City), and Manitowish Waters dot the map and offer numerous quaint shops and eateries. For the outdoor types, Northeast Wisconsin contains the Nicolet side of the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest with over 661,000 acres of woods ripe for exploration.

The area’s history is a colorful one with tales of logging, railroads, resorts, fur trading, and Prohibition-era gangsters. The area also lays claim to Carl Eliason, inventor of the snowmobile (known then as the Eliason Motor Toboggan) as well as numerous snowmobile museums and the Hall of Fame. As a result it has become known as one of the best places in the nation to snowmobile, and Eagle River hosts the World Championship Snowmobile Derby, an annual tradition since 1964.
